I grew up in Winnipeg and learned to sail in Gimli which hosted the PanAm Games in 1967 which led to the formation of the sailing club my parents joined. I was sailing by age 8 in my dad's wooden lapstrake lanteen rigged boat and got my White Sail at age 12. By age 18 I was a sailing instructor for the club and avid racer of dinghies and keelboats and our family had 3 sailboats and a powerboat. As a young adult I used my boating, first aid and swimming skills to work as search and rescue technician for the Canadian Coast Guard for 6 years. I then moved into education and have worked as an elementary and secondary teacher and vice-principal for northern and southern school boards. For the past 5 years I have been a Health & Safety specialist for the Upper Grand District School Board. I have traded in my sailboat for a kayak in recent years and also do a lot of cycling, running and cross country skiing. In winter I'm a level 3 race official for Cross Country Canada and enjoying volunteering at races across Canada. My volunteer experience with communication was with the Canadian Ski Patrol and their electronic newsletter and with the Science Teachers' Association of Ontario as their communication coordinator.
