It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of a founding member of BLSC, William "Bill" Thoms. Last year, at the 45th anniversary celebration and Commodore's Cup, the club was honoured to have Bill and his wife Maureen attend. The photo shows Bill and Maureen with Life Members Derek Street and Margaret Hull and current Commodore Denis Neumann. Bill learned to sail by the age of 5 at his summer home on the Isle of Bute, Scotland and passed that love of sailing onto his children and grandchildren. Three of Bill's children, Maureen, Megan and Robert are members of the club as well as many of Bill's grandchildren.
Megan shared the story of one capsize that sent Bill's glasses to the bottom of the lake, which, being a frugal Scotsman, he was very annoyed about. Years later, when the water dropped to a record low, Bill determinedly searched the exposed lake bed until he found his glasses.
The club extends its thanks to Bill and his family for helping to found the club and assisting it in a number of ways including serving as treasurer. Our condolences to his family. Bill's obituary can be accessed here.
